on videogame death

saw a headline on Hacker News ("From Dungeon Crawl to Meat Boy") that sounded like it was going to be a great article. It was too short though. Guess I'm spoiled on book-length observations.

I did like the opening observation a lot...

In the world of the early arcade, the player had to lose in order for the arcade to stay in business. More losses meant more quarters. .... Things were good. Then the arcade died, we started purchasing games for a flat fee, and it all went to hell.
