on videogame death

saw a headline on Hacker News (”From Dungeon Crawl to Meat Boy”) that sounded like it was going to be a great article. It was too short though. Guess I’m spoiled on book-length observations.

I did like the opening observation a lot…

In the world of the early arcade, the player had to lose in order for the arcade to stay in business. More losses meant more quarters. … Things were good. Then the arcade died, we started purchasing games for a flat fee, and it all went to hell.
